Why Longterm GoodReads Users are Switching to Storygraph

— and why you should too

For years people have been complaining about a couple of main features on GoodReads; The star system from 1 to 5 without the possibility to give half-star ratings, the content warnings (or more so the lack thereof), the trouble of marking books as ‘re-reads’, the confusing and quite outdated user interface, so on and so forth. Most of these are issues that do not require much coding work to fix, others might take a little more effort but would definitely be worth it in the long run, considering the huge audience that has to face these struggles.

This leaves both the authors and readers annoyed and unsatisfied.

On top of all of this, an extra factor that has made people hesitant to support GoodReads is the fact that it is owned by Amazon, and therefore owned by Jeffrey Bezos. As if enough of the online world isn’t already being dominated by this multi-billionaire, Bezos does not exactly gain the support of the people who just want to enjoy reading and reviewing their favorite books. Especially, when non of their cries for improvement to the site are actually being answered.

So you might be asking yourself. If GoodReads has so many negative aspects, why didn’t thousands of people switch to a like-minded website sooner?
