The Luxury You Should Invest In

And you can probably afford it.

Pretty much every day I feel like I have absolutely no idea what I am doing.

And also…

I feel more certain than I ever have in my life that I know I am doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing and I am doing it to the best of my ability.

Life is an enigma comprised of multiple truths that seemingly compete with each other. Being human is a trip.

These are just some thoughts that came to me in some time spent in stillness today, and stillness is what I’m here to talk to you about.

This week I’ve found myself spending quite a bit of time in stillness.

Just sitting in the quiet,
unwilling to move,
uninterested in mind-numbing scrolling,
not even meditating — just wanting to sit.

And I’ve really come to feel in my bones what a luxury stillness is.

I realize that for many, stillness is elusive or unrealistic. There are bills to be paid and things to be done and a human experience to survive. Some are lucky to be afforded sleep.

But I also wonder just how many of us are simply refusing the luxury altogether.

How often are we actively avoiding stillness even though we can afford it?

I understand that stillness doesn’t always bring the peace that it has brought me this week. Many times it’s brought just the opposite.

It often brings pain, anxiety, fear, and a host of other less desirable circumstances.

But I feel the need to gently remind us all that those things are going to exist anyways and always, whether we use stillness to sit with and understand them or not.

And in my experience, it’s harder to find any peace at all if we aren’t willing to face that reality.

What a luxury to take the time to spend with your harder emotions.

What a luxury to be able to feel and process pain, instead of having to go about your day pretending everything is roses when it’s not.

What a luxury to be able to reflect on perceived failures.

And what an amazing, beautiful luxury, when you’re able to sit in stillness with a deep appreciation for … whatever. Yourself, your couch, the weather … anything.

The moments when I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing happen most often when I’m in motion — doing things, trying to figure them out as I go, not knowing if it's going to work but, fingers crossed!

And it’s in the stillness that I am able to see where I am and know that it's right.

What a luxury.
