Boring is best

Agile methodology has now become the go to when implementing a solution to a problem. This is well and good, however most businesses forget that it’s not just about solving a problem — it’s about enabling continuous improvements whereby steps can be taken before problems emerge.

Below, we will touch briefly on Agile and then go into one of the frameworks that can be used to promote continuous improvement.

In short, agile involves taking a problem and splitting it into several small iterations and doing quick small deployments. It removes the waterfall requirement where everything needs to be developed before it can be tested and allows workstreams to happen in parallel, thus solving issues quicker.

There is different terminology used for each of the steps, but in essence these encompass the below.

The DMAIC method is a problem solving approach that can be used to promote continuous improvement. It is a data-driven method designed to improve business processes. In a nutshell, it consists of the steps below.

…meaningful data and measurable attributes to report to management, for example:

…the metrics defined above at set intervals and create dashboards, reports and alerts. Where necessary, incorporate this into board/committee reporting to drive your decision making.

…the data you are measuring continuously and using the early warning indicator, spot when things start to go wrong.

…processes by outlining possible solutions. Where necessary you may need to go through the agile cycle above, or at the very least capture these key steps:

… your solution and most importantly track its performance in delivering the required improvement. This may require several iterations and amendments of processes.

I’m going to stress this once again — don’t fix something for the sake of fixing it. Next time something goes wrong, give yourself ample time to react. So much time that it all goes unnoticed. Remember, boring is best!
