Make a date with your future-self. Yes, it’s possible.

Let me be honest. I’m not normally one for visualizations. But this future-self visualization is one that I return to at least once a year. I have found it to be a powerful tool to navigate decisions in my professional and personal life.

After the exercise, you’ll keep the future you in mind as you make decisions in your day to day life. Your future-self is available whenever you’re stressed or worried about a situation in your life. You can lean on her for advice.

How was it?

Grab your pen and paper and take notes. What did you learn based on what you saw? Don’t expect instant answers to your questions. You may need to wait to understand the meaning of what you heard and saw.

Here are some questions to help you journal about the experience.

Did you have a vision of the future? No. Instead, through the non-linear right brain, you’ve tapped into your inner wisdom. Tara Mohr calls this higher self our inner mentor. Your inner mentor knows all that you are capable of and is your biggest cheerleader if you’ll listen to her.

Were you too distracted to focus? Did you fall asleep? Or, God forbid, did you see a depressing vision of your future. Try again on another day.

How can you begin to live more like your future-self now? What would she eat for dinner? How does she dress? How does she spend her free time?

Now that you’ve met, you can have regular, shorter meetings together. Chat with her over your morning coffee or tea. Slow down, breathe, and call her up in your mind’s eye. Then ask her your question.
