Alcoholism and the Secret of My Weight Loss

How I lost weight and kept it off for over four years.

I was always the skinny one growing up, so it struck me by surprise when my weight began skyrocketing in my mid-twenties.

At first, I was actually relieved. As I went from 150 pounds to 160, then to 170, I thought that I was finally “filling out.” At last, I’d be able to face my grandmother without her telling me that I needed to eat more.

But, it didn’t stop there. At my height, the supposed border between a “healthy” weight and “overweight” sits right at 174 pounds. I started to get concerned as my weight crept towards this mark. I got really worried when my weight crossed it.

The weight gain only accelerated from there, and throughout my late twenties, I gained over ten pounds a year, eventually reaching a peak of 216 — well into the “obese” range.

I hated getting so big. It was uncomfortable, expensive (I had to replace all of my clothing, including suits, quite frequently), and I barely recognized myself in the mirror. So, as my weight increased, I started trying to diet more and more often.

Like most dieters, I had very little success. I’d try to count my calories for a week or so at a time before giving up. I never lost more than a couple of pounds, and never kept it off for more than a couple of days.

Then, miraculously, about five years ago, I figured out a way to actually start losing weight. I cut a massive source of calories from my diet, and the pounds just started dropping. I reached my goal weight around four years ago, and I’ve kept it off ever since.

So, what was my big secret? How did I suddenly go from gaining weight every year to losing weight without even really trying?

I quit drinking alcohol.

Alcohol was the dark secret behind my weight gain and sobriety was the key to my weight loss.

In describing my weight gain, the major element that I left out of the story was that during my twenties, I was also a daily, heavy drinker. I went through a minimum of a six-pack of…
