Cultural exchange programs can sometimes be the best experience somebody could ever have. They allow you to live moments you wouldn't be able to live if you stayed back in your home country. They show you that life is bigger than what you were taught growing up, and that is something that can change who you are and how you feel about yourself and your future in a way you could never imagine.

There are hundreds of thousands of powerful and life-changing things that happen when we move abroad that we don’t often get to hear from travel bloggers, YouTubers, and other writers. So, I decided to share 6 of them with you. These are some of the most incredible things that I didn’t know would happen to me when I lived abroad for several years, and that I think you should know before you embark on this adventure.

When you get to do so many different things in just a short amount of time, or when you get to live new experiences that you wouldn’t be able to if you were still living in your home country, and when you’re exposed to a new culture and people from all walks of life, or when you have to speak a foreign language and deal with the everyday problems and obstacles of an immigrant/international student, life is intense. And when so much happens, it feels like a day will go by faster than you expect.

When you live abroad you lose track of time very easily. Time just goes by so fast. The life of an immigrant and an international student simply does not pause. It happens nonstop. Then, before you notice, two, three, or four years have already passed and you didn’t even see how long you’ve been away from “home”.

In the beginning, you will say: “I’ve been here for 3 months, but I feel like I’ve been here for 10 years because of how much has happened”. But then, 5 years will pass and you will say: “Wtf.
