Can Elon Musk Buy the World?

After all, we could be prepared for anything.

He did it. In just three weeks. You’d think he went all-in by pushing $44 billion on the table, but that’s only a small part of his personal fortune, estimated at more than $250 billion dollars.

Elon Musk, the man who sees himself as the world’s great defender of free speech, has bought the Internet’s largest tweeting room, Twitter. I don’t put you links to articles about the buyout, you just have to be alive to have heard, read and re-read the news.

And so goes the world, without me. I stopped writing in 280 characters on June 20, 2021. I needed to find some air and time to write, among other things. I don’t miss Twitter, I’ve learned to live without it and I’m better off that way. As the years went by, I realized that being too connected was doing me more harm than good. That doesn’t stop me from keeping an eye on what the most powerful man in the world is doing.

And to ask myself: Can Elon Musk buy the world? I mean, how far will he go? How long before he buys the birds, trees and forests of the world? How long before he gets his hands on the oceans and mountains? How long before he makes the planet his playground, if it isn’t already? And then can the Earth belong to one man?

Forgive me for going off the rails. It’s just that I put some shirts up for sale on a classifieds site and no one wants to buy them from me. I realize that my old shirts have no economic potential, but they deserve a second life, don’t they?

That’s how the contemporary world goes. And the more it goes, the less I feel good about it. So slowly but surely I move away from it, and I write. No one will ever buy me, will they?
