How You can make Writing Useful, Even when it’s Inconsistent.
Writing advice might be amongst the most irksome types of advice, perhaps right up there next to parenting advice. The difference is, at least in parenting there is a psychology to it.
I have heard one person say they hate it when an entire group falls in love with other members of the same group, since it’s unrealistic.
Then, another person said it’s a favorite trope.
And anyone whose been writing for even a few weeks knows that this is the norm, not the exception, for writing advice.
The major thing I would have keep in mind is to try to make sure that any advice you receive, even from published books on the writing craft, are based on experience and not on opinion.
People love inventing all sorts of grids and outlines and however -many-act structures, but sometimes they haven’t even tested them to see if they produce a book that is both interesting and sells copies.
My opinion is that writing advice should largely be ignored by new writers, who should focus on practice.
Once you know a thing or two, then you will have the context and internal writing framework to catch the advice that works for you and the advice that doesn’t.
It still won’t be entirely clear what doesn’t doesn’t work, and even worse humans naturally tend to avoid anything difficult, and a lot of the best advice involves a bit of difficulty.
So for seasoned writers, I suggest testing all sorts of advice out, even things your doubt will work. Even if you don’t use in the long run, you might find that you learned something you never would have otherwise.
Maybe at that point, it’s time to start trying out short stories, or if not, at least isolating the “damage” of experimentation to a chapter or two…unless you’re one of those people who writes a novel in a week.
