My First Solo trip to Cuba

I was turning the big 30 and was looking to do something for myself, I knew deep down i wanted to take a trip to bring the beginning of this new age

…. I went thru a roller coaster of a year and was in such a funk, that i wanted to change all that for myself because “ Hello, I deserved it”.

Three decades in this world is not an easy thing to have survived!!!

After months of debating between different destinations, i resorted to Cuba!

I was intrigued to explore a land that was prohibited to many for years. I was ready to go back in time and indulge in the people and the culture.

I researched everything that i would need and made every plan possible to make this trip as exciting as i could. From adding social media groups like “ All About Cuba” on Facebook and following all the hashtags i could for “#Cuba” to envision every place i would visit, food i would eat etc….

After settling on my stay i had to figure out all of the other little specks of this trip like the money situation. So in Cuba, there are two different currencies.

The CUP= Cuban Pesos & the CUC- Cuban Convertible.

To make it easy the CUP is mostly for local Cubans to use an has less value than the CUC which is the tourist converted money. The only time you will use the CUP is if you are trying to buy any local food or use the “ Collectivo” transportation that takes you around town. An easy way of figuring how to convert your CUC to CUP is to think that

24-CUP = 1 CUC.

After you get the tricks of the money you will easily be able to move around and not get tricked by locals!

I exchanged my money in the states since in all of the blog an social media groups i read that American dollars get highly taxed, so before i left i converted my USD into Euros. Make sure that you check prior to leaving the state the conversion rates. Another important tip your US issued credit cards are not accepted in Cuba so make sure you bring as much cash as you can. Make a budget of how much you will like to spend on a daily basis and stick to it. You do not want to be left with any money in Cuba, trust that it is not a story you want to tell your friends back home!

I was also advised of toiletry supplies that are essential to bring with you. Keep in mind Cuba is an underprivileged country. Yes, you are on vacation but this is a country where even the basic things are scarce. So make sure to bring all of your toiletries, that includes toilet paper and toothpaste. The most basic necessities are hard to find…….
